DANZIG IN THE STREET

We have been working together since 2007, therfore the Polish Euroshorts festival is our oldest partner, where we had the last stop of our tour for this year at the end of November. Three Hungarian movies, Katapult, the later awarded The Orange Passport and Mother’s Day from last year’s BuSho edition participated in the competition; and also at the BuSho panorama screening we presented Mrs. Rozgonyi, Entropia, The Tenants, Put of Character and The Man from the Fire avertised the Hungarian short film in the North. This time Olivér Bognár represented BuSho at the festival as a member of the International Jury, who sent us his summary.

I arrived to Gdansk at the middle of the one week festival, where we immediately started with a carefully pre-selected BuSho screening with Hungarian short movies from...

PREFACE TO THE SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN

Before submission oppurtunities are open for the 16th annual BuSho Festival, we take a little look back at what happened to us in the autumn, since the last festival ended. First we would like to thank the General Department of Hungarian Institutes Abroad and also the help of the Institute employees (Moscow, Paris, Stuttgart and Riga) for accepting and presenting the awards for the filmmakers who couldn't attend the festival. Of course there were award recipients to whom the award for posted forand considering the Hungarian Post Office,(in a short period of time three of our packages were sent back with ,,Adress Unknown" notifications, no comment, thanks anyway). Its always risky when Mexico, the USA or even Spain are the destinations for the packages...

15th „ROLAN” FESTIVAL YEREVAN

For the third time in a row BuSho was the Visegrad partner of Rolan Bykov Film Festival in Yerevan, where we took part with largest -3 person- delegation up to date! Balázs Simonyi director presented his animation film Lajos & Laci. Nándor Grosch was present as the Head of Kid's Eye Film Festival and held a workshop for small children. Charlotte Symmons as a representative of BuSho, had a discussion with youths and proudly presented Katapult (part of the 15th BuSho selection) from Balázs Szövényi-Lux. You can now read Charlotte's personal report! I am very glad that I could attend Rolan Bykov Children’s Film Festival in Yerevan...

VISIT IZMIR

All in all: it was insanely good! Let me try to put it into words below. When upon arrival to the Izmir Airport the security guard hugged us, I already knew that everything was gonna be alright. And I was right: the city is a laid-back, calm Mediterranean resort, where fat and well-groomed stray dogs are waiting for people to pet them on every corner, and the shiny-furred stray cats look at you a way that you have to raise your hat. In this environment, it’s a real pleasure to watch films. I took part in Izmir Short Film Festival (original title: Izmir Kisa Film Festival) between 5-10th November, as a member of the international jury...

BESTOF BUSHO 15 ROADSHOW

On the occasion of BuSho International Shortfilm Festival's 15th anniversary, we came up with the idea of astonishing high school students with shorts that are precious for us, and may as well be to them over time. So we set up a best-of screening material that can be devided into 2 parts. The first one includes only no-dialogue films, and the second contains just 3 opuses. This can be watched and discussed separately or all together, as it is only 104 minutes long. The prologue of this material is basically some self introduction of the Festival, because we did not only held the main event of BuSho over the past one and a half decade...

CHINESE TAKE AWAY

Somehow from the start it reminded me of the film with the same title by later favourite HMS presented at the 2006 2nd Busho Festival, when following a 2 year tug of war, but cleared only 3 weeks before leaving, that we’re headed to the Far East! Special thanks to Dr Buslig Szonja, the Director of the Cultural Institute, for keeping up this international relationship and for letting us know before the travel that because of chinese censorship this visit is only the preparation of the hungarian shortfilm presentation next year. The Peoples Republic of China is the most populated country of the planet, the last census counted a population of 1.4 billion. Its captial, Beijing, is not even the biggest city...

AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER…

...our destination was Brno, where we had the oppurtunity to get to know the historical old town and the famous checz beers, and also at the Serial Killer Festival to meet the the producers and television experts who are behind the tv series that live their new golden age across Europe (and the world). We were invited to the industry programme, but in paralell there were full house screenings all over the city, we could take a look at what is rolling right now in Iceland, Finland or Norway. One thing is for sure, If someone would like to break into the world of tv or streaming services, there are several international companies and workshops that can help with that. Go International Collaborations! A few days after Brno

WILD WILD BEAST

This year we have visited Beast (b-east) International Film Festival in Porto, and we have been here earlier for previous projects, but we still wonder how there is always something in the air here! Not surprisingly a lot of young people choose the "North-portugesecapital" as their current or long-time residence, so the statement of 15th Busho Jury member Andre Lameiras came as no surprise: Between OKNA Cultural Center, az institution that we run, and the organizers of the festival only three of us are portugese out of twenty, so I think we can put together a credible event dedicated to the motion picture culture of Eastern Europe. And put together they did, with a focus on Lithuania this year...

AUTUMN ARRIVED: HELLO EVERYONE!

Although one and a half decades have passed, we wonder each year how we can take little break after the festival ended, and then it turns out it is indeed a little break, as we keep going! First of all writing and sending out the closing press statements is crucial, as informing the international festival prize winners, setting up and delivering the awards, sending the annual press subscriptions is just the beginning. Watermarking the films of the traditional hungarian bestof selection is a bigger task, as designing and printing all the graphics which will help us organize presentations later...

HUNGARIAN SHORTS IN COMPETITION 2019

The compilation of the 15th BuSho Festival posed quite a challenge for our 5-members strong Pre-Jury, which they also reiterated in their summaries, and highlighted that the number of quality shorts exceeded the limit available for the competition programme. Indeed, if we take a statistical approach: 70 creations were selected as competition programme out of the nearly 1000 submissions, thus making up only 7% of the films screened by our selectors – but, naturally the time constraint is the main factor to take into consideration. Without too much of self-aggrandizing: they made the best choices and distilled the essence for our audience – for which we compiled a little appetizer from Hungarian creators.

Where to start... ah, yes! Parallel to the boom of the full spectrum of Hungarian shorts, the animation genre grew to a respectable extent and bore beautiful fruits in doing so. Mr. Mare by Luca Tóth made its world debut without speaking a single word at the 69th Berlinale, but at the same time told a story about condition-free, unilateral love, disillusionment, vanity and sexuality. The film of Anna Flóra Buda, titled Entropia that she created for her graduation at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design was screened also at Berlinale, and received the Teddy price of the independent jury due to creations involving LGBTQ topics.

INTERNATIONAL FILMS IN COMPETITION

Next to the Estonian animated filmmakers German artists will be in competition with several films, like Love me, fear me from Veronica Solomon, which is a dance metaphor about feelings, our roles and about the forms we create, or Nest, Sonja Rohleder's film about a naive bird of paradise. Of course there is no festival without French animation, so we will have Anne Laricq's masterpiece Il c'est passe quelque chose, which shows the last day of a long weekend at the beach, where everyone prepares to say goodbye and suddenly everyone sees everyone in a more attractive light. Of course there will be some excellent experimental films in the programme,

13th GOMBUSHO ALL-ART WORKSHOP 2019

We have thrown ourselves for the 13th („unfortunate”) time into the sea of dust the harvest brought, which has again not caused any trouble for the small but very enthusiastic team, because the pool, or the garden shower or the Szelidi lake were all there to wash off the dirt. The aim was to create the design elements of the festival, for which we had some long absent friends and five newbies, who have found out about us at the Partium Christian University, in the college dormroom, or the workplace café!

MEANWHILE...

Until the screening copies of the films arrive to the Festival, the 13th GomBuSho slowly begins, which is the all-arts creative camp, where we prepare the design elements of the festival, such as the spots, design, posters, catalogue, so on. This year we have extended our BuShocountry locations, so Szeged and Debrecen has joined the city of Sopron! Debrecen’s partner, Modem is the organizer for the...

STATISTICS FIRST HAND

This year’s 15th annual Budapest Short Film Festival has received a total of 894 submitted short films, which, according to our experience means that we will only be able to present the tenth of the films we’we been sent. so the pre-jury has to think carefully about which films it will recommend into the final program. Not surprisingly two thirds of the submissions have arrived through Freeway, followed by BuSho’s own online platform, which has received about 200 submissions, then Festhome and Reelport ends the list. First we have aggregated the sections categorically...

BEFORE FIFTEEN: ROAD(bu)SHOW 3.

Following the exceptionally rich fall tour, which included, just for mentioning, Porto, Prague, Istanbul, Baku, Amarante, Delhi, Syktykvar, Izmir, Yerevan, Bali, Cleveland and Gdansk was the route on which BuSho has roamed with different presentations, but there is no stopping, the next chapter is coming! For the february deadline we found out that out of our collaboration with old-new partners at Visegrad Project we are going to participate in five other collaborations. One of them is the returning Beast - Meet The East from Portugal, an other one is the Armenian Rolan Bykov Festival. We are joining again two Youth in Action exchange programs as well, of course if they will be approved for financing.

SAIL ON!

Following the first hundred registered entries to the 15th BuSho Festival, the pre-jury started their work of selection. The core of this jury remains, but we have 2 new lady members joined the board. They only came across the BuSho feeling last year, but already volunteered for tasks. Dorka Vermes was a member of the student jury last year by ELTE, and Adele Lengyel who joined our team a few years back on a workshop. There has been one change...
