On Saturday evening, September 5, the awards of this year’s 16th BuSho International Short Film Festival were presented at the Fellini Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute. In terms of the field, it is truly international, with 66 short films from 23 countries competing for the sculptures, but for the first time in a decade and a half without international guests, who are exactly a dozen more fit in the group photo below.

Two important information arrive yesterday morning, the first government information is connected to our international guests: „Coronavirus news came on 28th of August evening, that the second wave is here, the Operational Group gave its recommendation, and regarding border protection, Hungary is returning to the rules of the first wave, as a main rule, from the 1st of September, foreign citizens may not enter the territory of Hungary, only in justified cases.” Unfortunately, so far we have not received an answer as to what constitutes a justified case, such as membership in the international jury, but we sent the guest list...

16th Annual Budapest Short Film Festival starts 1st of September, and the hungarian films in the competition programme had again caused a bit of a headache to the pre-jury, as there were so many great hungarian shorts again, that it is really difficult to decide which ones make the cut. Those who doubt us say this is the advance of the home court, but to them we can only recommend the last sentence of the famous folk tale: Who does not beleive it, should go after it themselves! This film project aims to show the audience how the cinema shaped and reflected the attitudes of social resistance in Visegrad countries. Hands up! is the title of Jerzy Skolimowski's film from 1967, in which the director accounts for the generation of thirty-year-olds growing up in the Stalinism era. The new-wave form, uncompromising content and its origin (for 14 years the film was banned by censorship) make Skolimowski's film a guide that we want to follow when choosing the repertoire. After lengthy preparation and deliberation, the competition and panorama program for this year’s 16th BuSho Festival has finally been born. Based on the votes of the renewed pre-jury, 66 short films from 23 countries were finally entered into the competition, of which 5 were experimental, 15 were animated and 46 were fictional works. Once again, the Hungarian artists caused a serious headache for the pre-jury, because we got so many excellent works from the home field, that it was really difficult to decide in the confusion of abundance. There were some who did an excellent job but crossed the 30 minute entry threshold, others also hit the competition level even with their 2 films, but true to our habits we chose only one for the competition, again there are big returnees and debut young artists in the field. The FESTINET Short Film Festival Network was officially born in 2019, but among the partners there are several, who have been working on the international field for more than a decade! The Hungarian Institute Of Ljubljana is sadly temporarily closed when we arrive there in the middle of February, so we are going to held our Best of BuSho screening, with the added short films of the two other countries that are participating at the workshop, in the nearby town of Trbovlje, where we are going to reside as well. This project is a transnational youth initiative, created as on the initiative of young participants in the previous project Finding Humanity. The project will address the topic of stereotypes and related hate speech through the already existing informal methods of youth work, by introducing a new way of implementing youth work through new media (NFC method) into the work of partners and more broader.
